Director of Hospitality Capital Markets
John T. Murray serves as Director of Hospitality Capital Markets for Helmsley Spear, LLC, which was founded in 1866 and is America’s oldest continuously operating real estate company. Mr. Murray is a Hospitality Executive with 30+ years of experience in developing owner relations and managing all aspects of multi-site high-volume hospitality and recreational real estate. He has proven expertise in multi-unit full service and limited service hotel/restaurant management, brand franchising, site development and management contract development.
Mr. Murray grew up in Seattle, Washington and attended Seattle Preparatory School and Shoreline Community College, where his interest in the food industry started at Gasparetti’s restaurant. He then moved to New York to attend the Culinary Institute of America. He attended the prestigious Culinary Institute of America on the Edward T. Hanley Memorial Scholarship. His externship requirements were fulfilled at Skokie Country Club, Glencoe, Illinois. He graduated in March 1980 with an AOS Degree in Culinary Arts, and received the Keating Institute “Most Likely to Succeed” award. While at the Institute, he served as the student manager of the diner (now the safety office) and was a member of the class graduation committee.
After graduation, Mr. Murray worked for a series of restaurant and hotel companies in food and beverage operations including Ramada Inn, the Davries division of ARA Services and Holiday Inn Corporation. He subsequently took on multi-unit food and beverage responsibilities with Konover Hotel Corporation and Columbia Sussex Hotel Corporation. Mr. Murray began full service hotel management with Columbia Sussex Corporation and was a member of seven hotel opening teams along the eastern seaboard. He entered the multi- unit management and management contract development business with the Beck Summit Group.
Mr. Murray joined the InterContinental Hotels Group in 1995 as Director of Hotel Development for the Northeast and was recruited to the position of Vice President of Development for Hyatt Hotels Corporation in 2005.
Mr. Murray has been married to Rose Murray for 25 years and they have been long-time residents of West Hartford, Connecticut. Their son, John T. Murray II also lives in Connecticut.
